Spanish star Marc Marquez will arrive in Australia this week as the newly-crowned 2016 MotoGP world champion after winning the Japan round on Sunday.

The 23-year-old Marquez took some of the fizz out of next Sunday's world championship round at Phillip Island as he clinched the title with three races remaining.

Marquez's task was made easier as his nearest championship rivals Valentino Rossi and defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo both crashed out and he won the Japan race from Andrea Dovizioso.

During 2016, Marquez has had more wins than any other rider in the MotoGP class (five), most podiums (11) and most pole positions (six).

All three of Marquez's three MotoGP titles have been for Honda, but he still has some way to go to match the five world titles Australia's Michael Doohan achieved with Honda when the top division was 500cc.
