F1: Kvyat's 'baby octopus' explained

During free practice for this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, fans were treated to some team radio information between Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat and his pit garage, the Russian racer complaining about a ‘baby octopus’ in the car with him as he was lapping the Suzuka circuit.

Naturally the driver was not referring to a real baby octopus, but commentators and fans alike were puzzled by the comment.

“The return of Daniil’s ‘octopus’ that you might have heard him talking about on the radio in P1, this is actually something which has visited him before in a race in 2014,” Phil Charles, Chief Race Engineer explained. “It gave quite a high level of confusion back then when he said there is an octopus on the front of the car.”

“It was only after the race that we truly understood what he was talking about - a collection of long and thin tyre rubber marbles had gathered on the aerial on top of the cockpit in front of him.”
